Carpet beetles are insects belonging to Order Coleoptera. Small insects called beetles are typically found on trees in greener areas. Since they usually don’t bite people or spread liseases, they are generally considered to be harmless. But it doesn’t mean they can’t; do not make a sacrifice for your safety under such assumptions. Adult carpet beetles are usually small in size( 4-5mm) and oval-shaped. Larvae are usually red-brownish in color. Adults are always pollen and nectar feeders. They are mostly found dandelions and flower areas like gardens. The life cycle of carnet beetles in 3 stages: around windows and flower areas like gardens. The life cycle of carpet beetles in 3 stages:
1. EGGS: The eggs are white or translucent, 0.5-1mm in size, and difficult to see.
2. LARVAE: In terms of structure and movement, carpet beetle larvae superficially resemble hairy beetles. However, they have a dark coloration and a dense covering of strong bristles. Before becoming an adult, larvae go through multiple moults. The carpet beetle is not a pupa or a cocoon.
3. ADULT: Adults have a variegated coloration and are shorter than 0.5 cm

Common Types of Carpet Beetles
- VARIEGATED CARPET BEETLE- They are 2-3mm in size, oval-shaped, and mottled yellow and white in colour. Their life cycle is 9-12 months. They attack carpets, fur, feathers, horn, skin, and other meat products.
- BLACK CARPET BEETLE- They are 3-5mm in size, elongated, oval-shaped, and dark brown in colour. their life cycle is 6-12 months. They Attack woolen, silk, furs, skin, leather, and upholstered furniture
- AUSTRALIAN CARPET BEETLE-They are 2-3mm in size, oval-shaped. and dark black in colour. Their life cycle is 9-12 months. They attack woolen, carpets, and other meat products.
- FURNITURE CARPET BEETLE- They are up to 15mm long in size, silver-coloured, and with a flattened body. Their life cycle is 9-12 months. They attack upholstered furniture, carpets, and other stored foods.
Signs of Carpet Beetles Infestation
- Compared to damage caused by clothes moths, carpet beetles typically leave larger damaged regions in the dark, protected areas
- Near the damaged places are mounds of bristle skins that moulting larvae have discarded.
- At regions of damage, you'll find droppings that resemble the material they've eaten and are the size and shape of coarse sand.
- Adults first appear in the Spring or early Summer and are frequently seen on window sills as they attempt to leave the building to eat pollen.
Carpet Beetle Prevention Methods
- Items that have been damaged by clothing or curtains should be placed in a sealed black bag and expose in the sun for a few hours. This will destroy any eggs or larvae. After that, the items can be washed. Then, any delicate item that might be harmed by heat should be inspected thoroughly
- In carpeted areas, move heavy furniture and cabinets regularly. Look for damage and insect activity on the carpet.
- Check for adult beetles when new flowers arrive.
- Wash and pack away clothing in a sealed bag or suitcase at the end of each season.
- If there are many flowers nearby, adult beetles might frequently fly into your home;
- Vacuum all carpeted areas frequently, paying particular attention to the edges andunderneath big pieces of furniture.
Carpet Beetle Chemical Control
The use of insecticides in carpet beetle control usually relies on the following
methods-
- Surface sprays - All impacted areas should be sprayed with insecticide, giving close attention to damaged regions and other locations under furniture if you suspect carpet beetle presence or damage in carpets
- Space sprays - All shelves and drawers in cabinets that have seen carpet beetle activity should be treated with a space spray. Clothing should be taken of before treatment and put back on once the treatment has dried.
- Dusts - To guarantee thorough coverage, we utilise a duster head to brush the dust into small crevices like the corners of your basement, garage, and porch.
